The Air and Space Museum hosts a "Family Day" event in February - Black History Month each year and WOL is has become a regular. On 9 Feb 08 Way of Life Alumni AF Academy grads manned an information table and spoke with museum visitors about the "Academy Experience". WOL members brought a wealth of knowledege and experience to the event. Visitors, especially students and parents interested in the Air Force Academy, spent lots of time with our grads talking about everything from the Academy to life on active duty to transitioning to the civilian workforce. Kids took lots of pictures with our grads especially the WOL members who came in uniform. There is someting about that uniform!
WOL was extremely fortunate to have Lt Willie Llyod, USAFA 2007, come out from the USAFA Admissions Diversity Recruiting Office. This shows us we can count on support from USAFA Admissions if we make our requests in a timely manner and the project fits the USAFA mission.
Tuskegee Airmen Inc members were special Family Day guests (original Tuskegee Airmen held a Q&A session). Many of our WOL members enjoyed the Tuskegee Airmen forum while serving split duty at the WOL information table.
John Hicks, USAFA 1978, has already agreed to act as the project leader for the 2009 Family Day event. Contact John Hicks via email at jhicks78@aol.com. There is much talk about a social gathering either the night before or the evening of the event at the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum Stand by for more details. John Hicks will need help especially since this event has grown in popularity and we want to have a social too!
Here are some of the grads who came to the 2008 event:
Tony Marshall - USAFA 1968, Will Dantzler - 1976, Bobby Clegg - 1977, John Hicks - 1978, Richard Hall - 1979, Kenric Smith - 1981, Scott McClean - 1986, Craig Taylor - 1990, Oliver Washington - 1990, David Coley - 1990, Stacey Hawkins - 1991, Alex Cole - 1992, Sharron Coley - 1992, Glenn Gonzales - 1999, Tanika Gonzales - 2001, Willie Llyod - 2007.
Notice WOL had at least one grad from every decade at the event.
Also joining the team, Ray Barrows who was in charge of the minority Affairs office during his duty at the Academy. For those who ho way back, Ray Barrows followed the great Ted Spencer. Darrell Cousin, Langley AFB also stopped by to offer advice and information to visitors. Darrnell is a friend of Bobby Clegg's.
You know WOL will participate at the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum in Feb 2009. You know John Hicks, USAFA 78, has taken the lead. You know there will likely be a social either the night prior or the night of the event. Plan to be there. Volunteer to help John Hicks and reach him at jhicks78@aol.com.
Sincerely,
Richard Hall
WOL President
